Description
I met the late Rabbi Rabinowitz and was more than impressed by his quick-fire delivery of an amazing number of facts that he called to mind especially about Chassidic dynasties.
The book is a mirror of his speaking style, he seems to know every Chosid in London - who they are descended from , married to, where they were born, in which shtiebel they davvenned. The recollection is mind boggling.
My parents grew up in the East End, so I have vicarious knowledge of the area and its Jews. I imagine myself as an onlooker at the Dzhikov shtiebel in Old Montague St (my ggfather Nachamn Araten was a founding member) when the members were requested not to spit on the flopr, rather in the newly installed spittoons.
The book is now somewhat dated (it was up-to-date in the 1990s). The Hassidic community especially in Stamford Hill has grown exponentially since then. Would that there were someone to proucr s moremodern version of the book.
Two drawbacks : the author seems to rely on for example, schools seem to have provided their own description of curricula, Rabbi Rabinowitz talks of all the great achievements of Willie Stern, but omits any mention that he was the greatest bankrupt the UK has ever known.
